Six checks on a used roadster, and which ones actually decide your year's bill

Frame, hub, rims, bearings, brakes and tire sizing: what a careful buyer inspects on an old steel upright before agreeing a price this spring.

Fork blade comparison
Sight the two fork blades against each other rather than against a mental image of straight, since a rearward push from a curb strike is easy to miss head-on. A bent blade on an inexpensive frame usually ends the negotiation.
Bottom bracket threading
Many English roadster shells are 1.37 inch by 24 threads per inch, a standard still served but not by every shop's parts drawer. A stripped shell turns a routine overhaul into a decision about the whole frame.
Seized spoke nipples
A wheel whose nipples have rusted solid cannot be trued at any price, only rebuilt. Test several around the rim with a spoke wrench rather than trusting the two nearest the valve.

A used roadster is priced by the seller on looks and by the buyer on parts, and the gap between those two numbers is where the spring's spending happens. The bike in the garage sale photograph, a black rod-brake three-speed with a full chaincase, may need nothing more than tires, oil and cables, or it may need a wheel rebuild, a hub overhaul and a bottom bracket that no longer exists in the catalogs. Nothing about the paint tells you which. Six inspections, done in about twenty minutes with a wrench and a flashlight, will.

The frame and fork, before anything else

Start with the fork blades, sighted from the front and then from the side, because a curb strike or a low-speed collision pushes the blades back and leaves the rest of the bicycle looking untouched. Compare the two blades against each other rather than against an idea of straight. Then check the seat tube for a seized post, the bottom bracket shell and chainstay bridge for rust bubbling from the inside out, and the rear dropouts for spacing, since an English roadster hub sits in a narrower rear triangle than a modern one. A bent fork on a mass-market frame is rarely worth straightening; a sound frame with surface rust is the cheapest thing you can buy.

The comparison worth holding in mind is a current reproduction, where the frame is new, the spacing is standard and the threading is metric or common Italian. You give up the older bike's steel and its history, and you gain the certainty that a replacement bottom bracket will thread in. On a fifty-year-old British frame the shell is often 1.37 inch by 24 threads per inch, and a stripped one turns a cheap overhaul into a frame decision.

The hub, which is where the money is

Roll the rear wheel and shift through the gears with the wheel off the ground, listening for the indicator chain to seat and watching whether second engages cleanly or slips under load. Sturmey-Archer stamped a month and year into the hub shell, and that stamp tells you what you are working with before you open anything. An AW that clicks, slips and refuses second usually wants a new pawl spring, a clutch and an afternoon; an AW with cracked shell flanges at the spoke holes wants a new hub. Coaster-brake hubs hide their wear better, so pull the arm and look at the brake shoes.

Rims, spokes and the tire size you can still buy

Westwood rims, the ones with the flat inner track that rod brakes press against, wear thin from decades of steel-on-steel braking, and a rim that flexes under thumb pressure at the joint is finished. Check every spoke nipple for rust seizure, since a wheel with forty seized nipples cannot be trued and has to be rebuilt. Then measure the tire size. Most English roadsters take 26 by 1 3/8, the 590 millimeter bead seat, which is still made in several treads; a 28 by 1 1/2 wheel on a prewar frame is a narrower market and a slower order.

Bearings, cranks and cotter pins

Grasp the crank arms and rock them side to side, then spin the cranks with the chain off and feel for the gritty catch that means pitted cups. Cottered cranks are the specific check here: a cotter pin that has hammered itself oval will come out only under a press, and the replacement pins sold today often need filing to fit. None of this is expensive in parts. It is expensive in tools, or in shop time, and a bike bought at a low price with three seized cotters can still cost more than a sorted example down the street.

Brakes, cables and the parts that must fit a rider

Rod linkages need pivots that are free rather than merely loose, and the stirrups should return on their own when released. Caliper conversions on a Westwood rim will not work, which is a check worth making before you plan one. The Consumer Product Safety Commission oversees the braking and reflector requirements new bicycles are built to meet, and an old roadster brought back into daily service is worth bringing to that standard with fresh pads, a working rear light and reflectors that are actually attached.

Buy the frame and the hub. Everything else on a roadster is a consumable, priced and available, and the twenty minutes spent on those six checks is what separates a spring of riding from a spring of ordering parts.
